People are often surprised to hear that the very first game of bingo started out as an Italian lottery dating way back to 1530. What’s even more surprising is this very same lottery is still functioning today.

The French developed a version of bingo that they named lotto.

The cards were made of very heavy cardboard and dried beans were used as markers. Upon the return home of the toy salesman, he put together a crude form of the game and tried it with his friends. They became just as excited about the game as the carnival players did. One woman who won got so excited that she yelled “Bingo” instead of “Beano”. From that point on the toy salesman was determined to develop the game of bingo. Which is exactly what he went on to do.
